Building Block Valentine

I like to use special folds or techniques when making cards for my husband.  When  I saw the Building Block card on SCS, I knew that was the one to use for his Valentine.  I embossed the letters and heart on the blocks with opaque white embossing powder and added faux stitching with a white gel pen.  I used stamps from four different companies on this one.  In a rare card for me, this one has NO digi stamps.  :)  I kept the left inside panel blank for my message.

The front is an old Unity Stamps image.  I embellished it with black rhinestones, a marker and some Wink of Stella.  I also used faux stitching and more black rhinestones to finish off the front panel.

The sentiment on the inside panel was actually a 2 line stamp.  I used "selective inking" to turn it into a 4 line stamp.   I layered several heart die cuts and gave them several coats of Wink of Stella.

Love in Deed and in Truth

This week's focus verse at Word Art Wednesday is 1 John 3:18, "My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth."  This verse admonishes us to not just say we love others but to put our love into action.  When we get to do what we like to do, showing our love for others is easy to do.  However, when it costs us something, time, money, self-sacrifice, then it gets a bit harder.  However, that is the kind of "love in action" that the Apostle John is talking about.  For the perfect example of this principle, we need only look to what Christ did for us by dying on the cross.  Now THAT was love in action.

For my card this week, I chose to use the sunburst technique for my card design.  The trees were paper pieced.  I think the faux stitching gives it a sort of quilted look.  I masked the trees and inked the image panel with some distress and dye inks.  {Yes, I realize I could have done my inking before paper piecing the trees and then I wouldn't have needed a mask.  However, I didn't think that far ahead when planning out the card.}  I mounted the sunburst panel and verse panel on a square of dark brown cardstock before adhering it all to a white 5.5" square card base.

The verse is printed on patterned paper and a ribbon covers the seam between the sunburst panel and the verse panel. The image panel is popped up off the card and placed over the ribbon.  I also did a bit of interior decorating and included more faux stitching.

The verse panel is finished off with more faux stitching and some pearls.  The tree tops were given some stickles for a bit of shimmer.

Butterfly Spotlight

I have a different type of card to share with you today.  I've seen a couple cards recently that were clear.  I really like them but haven't made one in a long time. When I saw this week's challenge at Flourishes to use acetate on your card, I decided now was the time.  I also was introduced to a great sketch challenge blog, Tuesday Morning Sketches.  They are having a birthday celebration (Happy Birthday, TMS) and have 4 different sketches to choose from this week.  I chose to use sketch #4 but added the bow element to help cover where the acetate is attached.  Sketches are for inspiration and don't have to be followed exactly...right?  :)

I also wanted to try a "new to me" technique I've seen around blog-land and decided to try the Spotlight Technique.  It was kind of fun and certainly adds a dramatic touch.  Beate has a great tutorial on the Spotlight Technique over on SCS.

I lined the interior of the card with a lavender dotted paper and added a place for a note.  The decorations on the front hide it from view.

I used the space behind the front decorations to add a Scripture verse.

Here's a view of the inside of the front panel of the card.  I learned that photographing a clear card with a white background can make cropping/editing it a challenge.  It's hard to see where the card ends.  Maybe I'll try a black background next time. 

Note to self:
When making clear cards in the future, and when using a thick transparency instead of clear "cardstock",  add patterned paper or cardstock to the bottom edge for stability.

Happy Anniversary {Butterflies}

I thought this card by Cards4Joy on SCS, was a great design and decided to CASE it.  Actually, I liked it so much, I made two different versions. I swapped out a few things to make it my own but kept her overall design.


Version #1 - White embossed card base

I embossed the card base and added a matted patterned paper strip.  The edges of the strip were die cut with  a Spellbinders Classic Edges die.  I did not use one of the inserts on this card.  The butterflies were stamped, colored with Copics, fussy cut and inked.  They were adhered only in the middle so the wings could be folded up for dimension.  There were given a strip a pearls for their bodies.

I used pre-embossed  cardstock for the card base.   The rest of the card construction was like version one except I used an insert on the die cut edges, the butterflies' wings were accented with Stickles and I added faux stitching to the card base.

This card also got some interior decorating.  I added a pocket on the left inside panel so that a gift card could be tucked inside.

I Love You Moost of All

Please let me introduce you to Millard - The Moose on the Loose.  Millard is part of a new set of digi stamps designed by our daughter-in-law, Amy of LoveBeingWright Designs.  The set comes with 2 Millard images (one full body and one head shot) and 6 sentiments.  Amy's inspiration in drawing Millard was a moose our son gave her a couple Christmases ago. 

I used a sketch by Mojo Monday (MOJO268) for my card design.  I embossed the main circle and inked it using a direct-to-paper technique.  The perimeter of the background panel and the two accent circles were paper pierced and faux stitches were drawn with a marker.

I colored Millard with copics and fussy cut him.  He was then popped up over the embossed panel.  The sentiment was anchored with a button from my stash that had been threaded with a bit of baker's twine.  I'm planning to drop this card off at my hubby's work to let him know I'm thinking of him during the day.

A Hundred Hearts.... - SNSDC86

It's time for the first challenge in 2013 for the Sweet 'n Sassy Digi Challenge Blog -- Something New.  It can be a new product, new technique, new card design, anything as long as it's new to the crafter.

For my card, I used a card design that I've never tried before....a Flip Down Stack Card.  It's this week's tutorial at SCS.  It was so much fun to make and the tutorial is fantastic!

Fill Your Heart with Joy - SNSDC83

This week's challenge at the Sweet 'n Sassy Digi Challenge Blog is an easy one.  We'd like to see you make a Christmas card.  The only requirement is that you have to use digi stamps.  If you use Sweet 'n Sassy digi stamps you may be chosen to be spotlighted on the blog during next week's challenge.

I chose to use this happy snowman on my card this week.  I used this week's sketch from SCS (SC414) for the card design.  It really came together quickly.  The finished card is 4.25" x 5.5" and the squares on the front are 2 3/8".  I embossed the background panel with the Cuttlebug embossing folder and matted it on a piece of dark blue cardstock.  I colored the Smiley Snowman with markers and fussy cut him.  I gave him a couple black pearls for buttons.  A few rhinestones were added to some of the snowflakes.  Even with the rhinestones and pearls, it is still pretty flat so it shouldn't require extra postage to mail.

For the interior, I used the Merry Christmas sentiment from the Christmas Sentiments set and added a couple punched hearts.

 I got to play with the new 4 Petaled Flower Digi Set.  I think this set was just made for paper piecing and layering...so that's exactly what I did!  :)

This week's challenge is to use scoring on your project.  I have scoring to make the shape of my card and I also scored each petal of my flowers to give the flower more dimension.  Each petal has 3 scores and then I folded them mountain & valley style.  You can see the scoring best in this picture.  My bling really doesn't have pink in it....it's the lighting.  Sorry!

I recently saw this card design on SCS in their Try a New Technique challenge for 9/10/12 (TLC394). It's called a "twisted card." I thought it looked so unusual and of course, as always, I really like new card folds.  I had to give it a try.

I adhered the front pocket closed and put a removable panel in the inside pocket for a message to the recipient.

Celebrate! - SNSDC71

It's time for another Sweet 'n Sassy Digi Challenge and this week's challenge is to make a card that has some type of pop-up element.  Since this goes in my "fancy folds" category, I was excited about this one.  I used this Pop-up Gift Card Holder tutorial from SCS.  SCS is one of my go-to resources for clear, easy-to-understand tutorials.

I colored Fluff with Copics and used a glitter pen on the frill at the top of his hat.  I used this week's CPS Sketch #282 for the design for the front of the card.  To allow for the tie to keep the card closed I moved the circles in the sketch a bit to the left.

I used a scrap of drawing paper to make the envelope to hold the gift card. I used a 1" circle punch to create the cut-out to make it easy to remove the gift card from the envelope.  Next time, I'll either decorate the envelope.  After assembling the card, I added the "Happy Birthday" panel with a few pop-dots.  I will definitely be using this tutorial again.  It's so easy to do!!!

Coneflower Happy Birthday

I decided to make a card today just for fun.  No design team assignment....just because.  :)

I colored the coneflowers and butterfly with Copics and then used my nesties to cut it out.  I wanted to play along with this week's Splitcoast Stampers Sketch Challenge (SC402) so that was the design for the card.  I added some bling, a ribbon and brought back an old favorite...STICKLES!  I've missed them.

To Be a Hero - SNSDC58

This week's challenge at The Sweet 'n Sassy Digi Challenge Blog is to make a card that has a maximum of 2 layers (the card base and embellishments don't count as layers).  If you know my cards, you'll know this is a true challenge for me.  So, in my mind, when I was making this card, the patterned paper strips, the puppy image and the jute are all embellishments.  *grin*

I used this weekly card sketch challenge on SCS for the card design.  I printed the sentiment directly on my 8.5 x 11 cardstock before cutting the card-base to 5.5 x 11.  I then layered dark blue cardstock behind some new (to me) embossed brown Bazzill cardstock.  Before adhering the two layers of cardstock to the card-base, I punched a hole in each corner and then threaded some jute thru the holes and tied a knot in one corner.  I then attached this panel to the base with pop dots.

The puppy was colored with copics and fussy cut.  The paper strips are from a piece of patterned paper I've been sort of hoarding in my stash. I inked the edges of the strips and all 3 solid cardstocks.  The line is called "Like Father, Like Son" and is by Fancy Pants.  Our son looks up to my husband and our grandson does the same with our son, so these father/son sentiments are close to my heart.  I used pop dots to attach the paper strips and the puppy.  I added a little glaze to the puppy's nose and a touch of glitter pen to his tag.  A little doodled frame around the sentiment finished off the card.

SNSDC57 - Friends

This week's Sweet 'n Sassy Digi Challenge is to make a card that has a camping theme or something that you see in nature.  I had planned to use a different image but this card kept running thru my head this week so, it won!  I'll use the other image another time I suppose.  :)

I went with a CAS design and challenged myself to see if I could emboss the front with an un-embossed area for the sentiment.  After a couple tries, I finally got one I liked and finished off the card with the sentiment panel & a ribbon.  There's a little bit of glitter pen used on the flower centers (cones?) and the butterfly.

Happy Birthday with Riley the Moose

As soon as I saw this Fishing Riley stamp by Riley & Co., I knew he needed to be part of my stamp collection.  Our son likes moose and he's an avid fisherman (so much so that he's the fishing manager at our local Bass Pro Shops).  This made Fishing Riley the perfect image for him!  I finally got brave enough to color Riley with my copic markers (images with a lot of coloring really push my comfort zone) just in time for our son's birthday.  Masculine cards are always a challenge for me but cute images like this sure help!

I used this Double Pocket Card tutorial on SCS to make my card.  A gift card is in the first pocket and is hidden behind the Riley panel. I paper pieced the boat and Riley's hat.

A tag in the 2nd pocket has a sentiment from another new favorite stamp.  This card opens up so that my husband and I were able to write a birthday note to him.

Birthday Praise - SNSDC53

This week's Sweet 'n Sassy Digi Challenge is to make a feminine card/project.  I used the Sweet 'n Sassy Proverbs 31:30 digi stamp as the focal image on my card this week.  This verse states, "Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised." Now, usually you think of this as a Mother's Day verse.  But when you read it, it doesn't say a mother that feareth the Lord, it says a woman that feareth the Lord.  So, I used it on a birthday card for a special young woman that we've watched growing in the Lord and truly striving to put Him first.  We felt she deserved praise for putting the Lord first even when it was difficult to do so.

I wanted the card to be special so I used one of my favorite "fancy fold" cards, a Tri-Shutter Card. This Tri-Shutter Card tutorial on SCS explains how to make one for yourself.  I used some favorite Basic Gray papers, lots of pearls and bling and a bow to finish it off.

SNSS April Digi Stamp Release & SNSDC50

This week we're mixing it up a bit for our Sweet `n Sassy Digi Challenge .  The Digi Challenge DT are bringing you a fun Blog Hop to show off our April Digi Stamp Release!!

This week's challenge is to make it old.  We were to use distress/sponge techniques to make our project look old or vintage.  My card has lots of sponging on it but I'm not sure I captured "old."  Ah well, I did try.  :)

I got to play with the Opal Owl digi stamp.  I think she's adorable and just perfect for paper piecing.  I explained a little last week how I paper piece digi stamps.  In the next few days, I'll have a more complete tutorial with pictures ready for you.

I used several embossing folders in my Cuttlebug to add texture to the tree and grass. I have to thank my "design assistant" (aka my husband *grin*) for his suggestion of using a tree, for the "hill" of grass and the suggestion of using a small owl on the inside.  Gotta give credit where credit is due. After running the tree top, tree trunk, and grass thru the embossing folders, I sponged them with ink to brink out the embossing.  I used the ink pad directly on the paper on the hill before running it thru my embossing folder.  Yes, the tree does go off the top and side of the card a bit. However, I know I'm not sending this thru the mail in a regular envelope so it's all good.

This is a gate-fold card. You can find a tutorial on how to make them over on SCS.  A card like this just *has* to have interior decorating.  Here's how I finished the inside of my card.
